American Academy of Periodontology 112th Annual Meeting

Dr. Shayan Barootchi is an Assistant Professor of Periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. An internationally recognized leader in periodontal and peri-implant plastic surgery. His work spans basic science, translational research, and clinical trials, with more than 150 peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Barootchi has pioneered minimally invasive techniques, advanced diagnostic tools, and novel surgical approaches for soft tissue grafting around teeth and implants. He has received numerous national and international awards, including several from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) such as the prestigious Balint Orban Clinical Research Award, Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award, and Schoor research award for best scientific manuscript of the year, among many others. He also serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Periodontal Research, as well As Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research. He lectures globally on esthetic implant therapy and soft tissue regeneration around teeth and implants.

Dr. Angela Palaiologou-Gallis is a Professor and Graduate Program Director at UT Health San Antonio. She earned her Certificate in Periodontics and Master of Science degree in 2000 from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Following seven years in private practice, she began her academic career in 2007. From 2009 to 2018, she served as Postgraduate Program Director in the Department of Periodontics at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry. A Diplomate and Past President of the American Board of Periodontology, Dr. Palaiologou is currently serving as the Director of Examinations for the ABP. She is a past board member of the Southwest Society of Periodontists and has actively participated in professional organizations including the IADR/AADR, ADA, SADDS, and TDA.

Within the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), she has served on the 2022 Best Evidence Consensus on Biologics in Clinical Practice and currently on the 2026 BEC on Periimplantitis Prevention along with other AAP committees such as the In-Service Exam Committee, Education Committee, and the Match Task Force. Her dedication to education and mentorship has been recognized with the 2020 AAP Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics Award. She chaired the AAP Postdoctoral Directors Organization from 2017 to 2019 and has served as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation since 2015 and as a CODA Periodontics Review Committee member. Additionally, she is a 2014 fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute. Dr. Palaiologou has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

Frank Schwarz is Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Surgery, Implantology and Oral Medicine at the Centre for Dentistry and Oral Medicine (Carolinum), Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany.  He serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, and a member of the editorial boards of Periodontology 2000 and Clinical Oral Implants Research. 

Professor Schwarz is a member of the Board of Directors of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO), an Executive Board Member of the Osteology Foundation, and Past President of the German Association of Oral Implantology (DGI).  His distinctions include the André Schroeder Research Prize (2007), the Miller Research Prize (2012), and the Jan Lindhe Award (2017).

Adjunct Professor in Periodontology at the University of Catania from 2018 to 2022. Winner of the“Henry M. Goldman Award for Clinical Research” by the Italian Society of Periodontology in 2000 and of the “National Award in Clinical Orthodontics” by the Italian Society of Orthodontics in 2006. Recipient of the “R.Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award” by the American Academy of Periodontology in 2022, the ”International Award in Scientific Research” by the Ancient Salerno Medical School in 2022 and of the “Outstanding Presentation Award” by the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons in 2023.  Author of more than 50 articles published on peer-reviewed international journals, he signed the chapter “Seeking the Optimal Aesthetic Result in the Maxillary Anterior” in the textbook “Implant Therapy: Clinical Approaches and Evidence of Success”, Eds Nevins M. & Wang H.L. (Quintessence Publishing, 2019) and the chapter “Management of post-extraction sites in partially edentulous patients with multiple edentulism” in the textbook “How to do it” Eds   Simion M, Bressan E, Zucchelli G.
